DOB: January 9, 1987
Places Lived: Kansas my whole life, but I wish to be in the mountains like the Rockies, Cascades, Tetons, or the Cordillera. I was born in Parsons, and lived in Altamont, Lebo, Satanta, Chanute, Humboldt, and Lawrence. My dad was a Preacher so we moved when he felt like he was called.
Occupation: I am a student at the University of Kansas getting my B.A. in Environmental Studies. I Also work in the Backroom at Target. Full time job, full time student!!!
Who are your favorite musical acts? I used to be a huge Eric Clapton fan, and I went to see him in concert, but I wasn’t blown away by his performance live. I actually fell in love with this blues artist who opened for him named Robert Cray. Bob Dylan amazed me live too!
What are your nicknames? I have too many, but I have a few that have stuck with me. Billygoat was my first nickname by my grandfather. Tipper was what my friends called me growing up, and my family have always called me Granite or Grantie M.
What was your first job? Mowing the yard and shoveling snow for my dad, my first actual paid job though was a Ranch/Farm hand. I used to get paid to ride a horse all day and round up cattle, check water pumps, and fence lines.
What is your most treasured possession? It used to be my guitar. I was always playing, my mother got me into music and that is what I majored in for two years in college, but then life happens and things change. I played a 72’ custom Fender Telecaster that I loved to play the blues on, but I ended up selling it when I had money problems because I don’t like to ask my family for money. I have two other items that are my most treasured items, both given to me by my father. One is my baseball glove, I played a lot and my father was my coach, I also took it to every Royals game with him. I remember catching a foul ball at the game that was hit off of Mike Sweeney. My other item is my Benchmade knife that my father got me on my birthday. I have always been a huge fan of the outdoors and camped a lot starting with cub scouts when I was young. I learned that your knife is one of the most important item to have on you for survival. I never go on a trip without it.
What is your favorite vegetable? A Sweet Potato.
What is the trait you most dislike in others? Dishonesty
What is the trait you most dislike in yourself? My patience. I am very impatient with people, and that is why I love nature more because there is hardly anyone around me, just the beauty of the wild. I can not stand to be around people all the time, but I have been working on it.
What is your favorite TV show? Man vs. Wild, Planet Earth, and recently I have fallen in love with How I Met Your Mother.
What do you consider the most overrated virtue? I believe that virtue is somebody’s divine speculation in which they act under responsibility and faith to some higher being. It is not for me to judge who’s or what virtue is overrated.
What is your favorite thing to wear? Levi jeans. They are comfortable, reasonably priced and last for a long time.
What is your greatest regret? It would be hurting someone who I cared about, but I do not look back on my regrets because I would not be who I am now.
Who is your favorite NBA player? “The Cooz,” Bob Cousy. He played for the Boston Celtics back in the 50’s and 60’s
What is it most that you dislike? I dislike people who shuffle their feet. Pick them up you lazy bastards.
Which sounds or noises annoy you? I get really annoyed at peoples phones when they beep every time they get a text message. Why can’t they just put them on vibrate?
What is your greatest achievement? Climbing to the tops of mountain peaks. There is just this great feeling in me when I reach the top, and it all starts to sink in when I sit down to rest and just admire the scenery. You can see for miles and miles. My first mountain I climb was Spanish Peaks when I was in boy scouts. Not a very high mountain, but it was my first. My first Mountain over 14,000 ft was Handies, and now my bestfriend, Ayrick, and I are going this winter to alpine climb Quandary, Gray, Torrey, and maybe Long’s Peak.
What is your greatest fear? I have two. I hate clowns and I have a fear of dying by being stranded on a raft in the middle of the ocean with no water. I guess being stranded on a raft with a clown in the middle of an ocean would be the ultimate whammy.
What was your last purchase? A Carrot Cake Cliff bar, they are delicious.
Which talent would you most like to have? I have always wanted to be a human beatbox champion.
What makes you smile? Climbing, mountaineering, camping.
Is there anything else you wish for everyone to know about Grant Myers? I have been thinking about starting my own blog site about mountaineering. Talking about my own climbs, gear, best places to go for an outdoor vacation, outdoor movies and books, and people who have changed history and influenced others in mountaineering and climbing.
